Echoing Ghosts

“Murderer!”

Tears blurred Kallan’s eyes as his sword swung against the enemy captain’s blade. Blades clashed against each other, in the midst of smoke and screams.

The one-eyed captain blocked each and every one of his blows. Swerving his way out of one of the strikes, the leaned into Kallan's ear, whispering, “It is your fault, you know. You knew the life you led. The life you let her into…You only have yourself to blame.”

His men were falling like the ashes drifting around them onto the ocean’s surface,; his ship torn apart in bits and pieces from every cannon lit by the enemy’s crew.

But he couldn’t stop.

Rage and pain overtook his sense of reasoning, and he leaped at the captain for a killing blow.

Kallan never saw the blow coming from behind.

When he woke up, water was choking his sore throat, the salinity burning like fire. The sun blinded his eyes as he sat up, being haphazardly supported by a piece of wood.

He was alone, floating against the waves amidst the ocean’s abyss.

Poor Captain Kallan.

No crew.

No ship.

No love.

Nothing left other than the echoing ghosts of a lost battle and the splinters of a once glorious ship.
