A road trip is a strange space of time to be alive in.
You realise how pointless and meaningless the things you worry about on the daily are. You realise just how much more there is to life. You realise, relearn, understand yourself.
It is as though time is suspended as you embark on this journey to figure yourself out. It is waiting for you to get back to go on.
There is a lot more to focus on for the time being.
The hum of the engine, the bump in the road. The correct temperature of the air conditioning and the person in the driver seat singing along to the song you put on through the aux.
It’s the mess you’ve created in the backseat, with blankets and wrappers strewn all over. Your paperback is buried somewhere in the mess. So is your bag. So is your phone. So are your earphones. And so are your problems.
You stare out of the window.
A mountaintop, a lake, a dog running with its owner in the fields.
A family restaurant, the stars in the night sky, and the young girl with her head out the window coming to the same realization as you.
You smell the air.
Grass, roses, morning mist and the leather seat of the car.
You realise you cannot be worried over failed tests and failed friendships when a feeling like this exists in the world. There is more to discover. More people to understand, more songs to memorise, more laughter to be shared.
Time is waiting for you to make your space in the world, waiting for you to learn to breathe freely.
You will understand what it means when they say the journey is better than the destination.
It is this road trip and its mundane beauty that will help you get there.
